March 23, 2017 Saus
Did you know that there’s a restaurant in Boston that has over 15 kinds of dipping sauces for French fries? Oh yes people, Saus has flavors like “Saturday Night Chive” with fresh chives and sour cream, “Cheddar Duvel” with sharp and mild cheddar and Duvel ale (served warm), and “Ole Chipotle” with chipotle in adobo, lime juice, cilantro and house made mayo. Any restaurant that designs its menu around French fries is AOK in my book! I camp out early to be the first one in and grab a table close to the counter. Tight quarters in here, but most people are taking out.
They do have other things here besides French fries – we tried the wild mushroom grilled cheese! The sandwich is made on stone ground whole wheat bread, with confit wild mushrooms, sharp cheddar and blue cheese vinaigrette. ($8.50) It’s vegetarian and you can truffle your mushrooms for just a dollar more. Grown up grilled cheeses are the best! We also have the Brussels sprouts ($5), which come shredded and topped with blue cheese vinaigrette.
Of course we add on some bacon because…well…bacon makes everything better.
We were really here to try out the poutine (it’s so hard to find good poutine), which is hand cut fries topped with cheese curds and housemade gravy. You can get it in any number of ways: two sizes, regular ($6.75), big ($8.50), and you can add on extra toppings like a deep fried egg ($1.50), bacon bits ($1.50), truffled mushrooms ($3), pork belly ($3) or bacon n’ stout braised beef ($3). We had ours with bacon, because, well…like I said before, bacon makes everything better. Loved the flavors and what was great was that it wasn’t soggy. Poutine can go wrong in so many ways, and this one was pretty darn delicious.
And as if this much food doesn’t make your stomach hurt just looking at it, we added on a side of fries, just to taste some of their delicious dipping saus. The vampire slayer, made with roasted garlic, roasted garlic oil and house made mayo was a crowd pleaser. Plus, if both parties are eating garlic, you cancel each other out! The Saturday Night Chive was also tasty, made with fresh chives and sour cream. Check out their website for a full list of options.
You order at the counter and they call you when your order is ready. Casual dining, friendly service.

March 22, 2017 Holly Crab
Just when I move out of the neighborhood, great things start popping up, like Holly Crab or Union Square Donuts, or a MINILUXE!!!! Is it too late to move back? Ok, I digress. Holly Crab. I can safely say that you should not go here on a first date. Or a second date. Probably safe to say you shouldn’t go with someone unless you’re serious. The long tables are covered with butcher paper and it’s about to get seriously messy. Bring on the bib, pass over an extra pair of those super sexy plastic gloves that they give you, because you are going to get dirty. Like sauce all over your face and you can’t make enough wet naps to clean me up kind of mess. (ok, maybe not that messy)
The concept is pretty simple. Pick your seafood, pick your flavor and pick your spice level. We went with the king crab legs (market price) in the garlic butter and the snow crab and shrimp combo ($38) in the holly crab flavor. I went with the mild spice level because I’m a wimp. I just want to point out that for this much money, I don’t think I should be getting this dirty…My husband loves to pick crabs, so this is right up his alley – me, I’m a yes, please split my lobster tail for me kind of gal.
The verdict? The rice balls were delicious and so was the seafood. Love the flavors and the seafood is fresh. Can’t wait to go back again.
Parking is on street at metered spaces and on side streets for free 2 hour parking.

March 21, 2017 Bar Boulud
I had been sitting on a gift card from the Mandarin for quite a while and decided that I was never going to make it to the spa, as much as I would have liked to. So I decided to take my gal pals out to lunch at Bar Boulud. The Boston location is the sister restaurant to the New York and London locations of Chef Daniel Boulud’s French bistro and wine bar. The bread basket it lovely and we order some gougeres ($6) to start. The choux pastry with gruyere are impossibly light and savory at the same time.
I had the macaroni and cheese with pancetta and bread crumbs ($27). Delicious in every way – the cheese sauce was perfect and the pancetta had the perfect crispiness to add texture to the dish. Served in a cast iron skillet, this is the perfect comfort food for a cold winter afternoon.
Other table selections included the mackeral ($18), the salad chou chou ($12), the onion soup ($10), the bon bon ($10), the tiramisu ($10), and the gateau basque. The onion soup looks amazing doesn’t it? Another great dish for a cold day. The gateau basque (bottom left) was a favorite of the table with its pastry cream, flaky crust and brandied cherries. I usually don’t like my desserts deconstructed, but the tiramisu was delicious and not too strong.
Service was excellent, what you would expect from a restaurant in the Mandarin Oriental. Overall excellent experience and a great place to power lunch or spend the day with friends.

March 17, 2017 Ruka
It’s just like me to go to a party where they are serving complimentary drinks and passed appetizers and go to the restaurant next door and spend all my money. The Godfrey Hotel recently turned 1 and we were at the party! I had been wanting to try out Ruka, and hey, since we were there anyways…we mind as well go in and grab a bite. So the culinary team behind Yvonne’s and Lolita opened this amazing Japanese Peruvian restaurant. The decor is stunning and there is a lively bar scene (every drink that we see being made is a work of art – totally Instagram worthy). It doesn’t appear crowded when we arrive but reservations have booked up all the tables – so we grab a seat at the sushi bar.
We have a few small plates to share: (top right and moving clockwise) the sweet potato dumplings ($17) with trumpet mushrooms, wasabi oil, a soft poached egg and barley dashi were a favorite. The egg was AMAZING. Next was the hamachi ($17), the fish was so delicate and fresh. The chicken fried rice was made with char sit chicken, garlic sauce and egg. Another stand out dish – your old favorite fried rice kicked up a notch! The ribeye ($16) was cooked perfectly and served with chili salt, dashi butter and crispy ginger.
Service was excellent in the beginning and tapered off towards the end of our meal – it was SO busy!
And while the dinner was delicious, the star of the show was definitely dessert. When I read the description of the big fish dessert, I didn’t know if I was going to like it, there are a lot of things going on in this dish, but it was AMAZING!! So many different flavors and textures all melding together beautifully. One of the best desserts I’ve had in a long time. A bigfish dessert waffle with prickly pear sorbet, ice cream, caramelized peanuts, chocolate crunchies, and caramelized, brûléed bananas.
Great place for a romantic date for dinner or a casual date at the bar and they have a great table to accommodate large parties near the sushi bar.

March 16, 2017 Mamaleh’s
Mamaleh’s is a great Jewish deli located in Kendall Square (from the same team that brought you State Park). They are closed Mondays and serve breakfast all day! I’ve been there twice and we actually catered my dad’s birthday party with Mamaleh’s.
So what is with the name? Mamaleh is a yiddish term of endearment for a young child.
What’s the food like? Well I brought my dad there, he’s from New York and is serious about his Jewish delis. He always grumbled that he could never find an egg cream soda anywhere (pictured bottom left). What’s an egg cream soda you ask? Well, there’s actually no egg or cream in it. It’s a beverage made of milk, carbonated water and chocolate syrup. My dad says that the reason why they were so good is because the seltzer came out of the soda fountain – you just can’t get that same consistency when you try and make it with bottled seltzer. The verdict. He liked it, complete with pretzel rod.
I had the Dr. Brown’s black cherry float with a chocolate scoop ($6) which was delicious (middle right) and I’m not really a chocolate ice cream kind of gal. Now, let’s get to the food. The matzah ball soup ($7.50). Delicious. Flavorful broth with carrots, celery and chicken. I grew up eating kasha varnishkes but these are totally different. Mamaleh’s makes the buckwheat with mushrooms and Brussels sprouts. The hot dog in a homemade bun did not disappoint. The potato latkes ($8.40) were delicious. Perfectly crisp on the outside, and served with sour cream and apple sauce (but I really only love them with apple sauce).
The hot pastrami (middle left) sandwich is what I dream about…it is hand sliced and served on marble rye with deli mustard (but hold the mustard for this girl). The cure, brine, smoke, roast, braise and steam all of their meats in house. You can taste the love. Can’t do a whole sandwich, you can order most of them as a half a cup of soup and a half sandwich.
Let’s talk sweets. You can grab some to go at their bakery – and everything is delicious. I love the glass case that spins the cakes around. The rugelach were my favorite, the raspberry walnut of course (but they also have chocolate). The black and white cookies were pretty tasty too, although I have to admit, I only like the “white” side.
They have a great website, make sure to check it out and maybe even learn a few yiddish words! They now offers these cute “welcome to the world, mamaleh” gifts which are such a cute idea. See them here. Head in to browse their gift shop for some super cute cards, shirts and bags!

March 15, 2017 Babbo
Babbo is Mario Batali’s restaurant located on Boston’s Fan Pier. They opened in 2015 and occupy an enormous space. The open floor plan has 3 bars and features wood burning pizza ovens. I have been before, see my previous review here, but was anxious to get back so that I could try some of the other dishes on the menu.
The marinated olives ($6) were at hit at the table (pictured bottom right) as well as the pizzas. Pizzas come in delicious flavors like Fungi e scamorza ($16) (third down from top) with Wolf Meadow smoked mozzarella, crimini, oyster and shiitake mushrooms; Boscaiola ($18) with tomato mozzarella, sweet sausage, chanterelle and Grana Padano; or salami picante ($17) with sheep’s milk ricotta, calabrian chilis, gaeta olives and cache di roma. The carbonara was my pick of the meal ($14) with pancetta, scallions, black pepper and egg. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and the sauce was so rich and creamy. I only wish that there was more of it!
Parking is limited on the street at meters and there are pay lots near by. Babbo does not have valet and they do not validate.

March 14, 2017 Station 5 Grille
Located in a small strip mall, Station 5 Grille is a hidden gem. The owner is a fireman, thus the name and the decor. They’re open at 7am, so great for families who have kids who are up early. We went late morning and the place was packed – not even a free seat at the counter!
They are only open for breakfast and lunch and are CASH ONLY, so don’t forget to stop at the ATM before you stop in. Omelettes are delicious here and will run you about $8-$9. They are served with potatoes and toast. I was in the mood for something a little sweet so I had the raisin toast which was a nice change of pace. In addition, they serve pancakes (buttermilk, blueberry, chocolate chip and sweet potato), waffles, French toast, Texas French toast, breakfast wraps and hash. They have a kids menu for those under 10 that are all around $5. Make sure to try one of their homemade muffins!
Lunch is a mix of sandwiches, wraps, soups, salads and burgers. Service was good and they had us in and out pretty quickly.

March 13, 2017 Pi Day: Where to Get ALL.THE.PIE
I barely passed geometry in grade school, but I can certainly get behind Pi Day. Each year, Pi Day is on 3/14 – get it? So I did some research to tell you where you can buy all the best pies to celebrate the day. I mean, we all have to do our part right?
So my fellow bloggers and I (together we are “Go Local Boston“) got together to taste test and photograph some pies last week. Check out their blogs here:
Nancy from Capability : Mom
Kim from KimWorld and Family Friendly Boston
Leah from Leah’s Life: Pearls and Oysters
If you’re out doing some grocery shopping for snowmageddon, make sure to stop at your local farm to kill two birds with one stone. If you stop over at Pemberton Farms you can get a Key Lime Pie from The Pie Guy. Key lime is one of my favorites! Wilson Farm in Lexington is my new favorite place to shop. Not only do I buy tons of prepared foods (don’t judge) from them but they also have a great bakery and nice selection of specialty goods. They make their own mixed berry pies (top photo – pie is in the bottom left hand corner with the lattice crust) which are delicious. I bought the smaller size which could totally be considered an “individual” size – I won’t tell.
Another favorite of mine is Verrill Farm in Concord. They have my very favorite pies – apple crumb. I almost don’t want to let you in on these pies because I love them so much and sometimes they run out! They have so much more than pie at Verrill, check out their website for fun classes and events.
Feeling like you don’t trust yourself with a whole pie at home? Head over to Rosebud American Kitchen and Bar for a good meal and a slice of pie for dessert. Oh, and you can totally take home a whole pie with you too! (again, not judging) The flavors this month are mocha cream (the filling is SO dreamy), blueberry crumble, peanut butter fudge, Dutch apple and cranberry pear. Stay tuned for a blog post about my meal here!
Leah recently introduced me to Hi Rise Bread Company, they have locations in Cambridge on Mass Ave and Huron Ave. They have delicious sandwiches and a killer baked goods counter. I love, love, love the vanilla bread (I’m drooling as I’m thinking about it – order the end piece, trust me!) but they also recently had these tasty lemon meringue pies that look (almost) too good to eat!
New on our radar, thanks to Kim, is Shoofly Pie Baking Co. Get this, it’s a PIE DELIVERY company!! That’s right, delivery! Kelli makes these beautiful pies – I am SO impressed with lattice crust. My heart broke a little bit when we had to cut into her pie, but it was so worth it. I almost forgot it was a cherry pie, the filling was so dark – it was like no other cherry pie I’ve ever had. Beautiful whole cherries – you won’t be sorry. Pie flavors change weekly, this week’s pies are as follows:
Savory – Cauliflower Manchego Rosemary: Creamy cauliflower with earthy manchego, rosemary and red onions baked in a traditional flaky crust.
Sweet – Malted Double Chocolate: Silky malted milk chocolate pie baked in a dark chocolate crust.
Pies come in two sizes, a small 5″ pie and a large 9″ pie.
One of my recent favorite meals I had was from Southern Kin Cookhouse in Assembly Row. See my post about them here. We went back just to taste the other flavors of pie. You can get a slice for $7 or a whole pie for $36. Pies come in the following flavors:
Buttermilk Pie: vanilla and lemon scented buttermilk custard with nutmeg
Pappy’s Mud Pie: chocolate fudge pie with chocolate ganache and crumbled almond praline
Georgia’s Peach Crumble Pie: with caramel sauce and chantilly cream
Key Lime Pie: with toasted meringue and candied lime
Coconut Cream Pie: with toasted coconut and bourbon toffee sauce
Brown Butter Bourbon Pecan Pie: with chocolate ganache sauce
There isn’t a pie here that I didn’t like. Ok, well that’s not entirely true. I’m not a coconut kind of gal, so I didn’t try that one. The key lime pie, above, was AMAZING. I love the meringue top – it just adds a whole other dimension to the pie. I can never go back to having it without. The pie filling was sweet and tart and the meringue was light as air.
I didn’t read the description of the mud pie before we ordered it, so I was surprised at its consistency. I was thinking it was going to be an ice cream pie, but was really pleasantly surprised when this came out. This is fork licking delicious – I wanted this one all to myself!
Petsi Pies has both sweet and savory pies. I’ve known about them for a long time, they never disappoint. Above is the bacon, leek and gruyere pie. Delicious, perfect for a brunch! This was a great addition to our taste test because it gave us a break from all the sweet pies! They also offer a spinach ricotta with pie nuts and a roasted vegetable and goat cheese savory pie. Did you know they make chicken pot pies? They come in two seizes, a 5″ and a 10″. See the top photo, middle row on the right with the chicken on it. Loved the consistency of the filling, not runny at all.
So cherry pie has always been my dad’s thing. Me, I’m a pure apple kind of gal. That is, until I had Petsi’s cherry crumb pie. There’s just something about it, I can’t put my finger on it, that I just love. Stop in to Petsi for a slice, or pick up a whole pie. If you need a whole pie, best to order ahead – give them 48 hours.
The banana chocolate cream pie is not one that I would normally gravitate to, but the one was light, and not too banana-y. Look at all that beautiful whipped cream!
Some popular savory pies can be found at KO Pies, either at the shipyard or in South Boston. You pop these beauties right out of the tin and eat them with your hands. Check out this cute instruction manual on how to eat their pies. We tried the classic beef, the curried vegetable, the lamb shank, the pie of the month which was a pulled pork and a beef stew. Enjoy a hot one on location or pick up a few frozen ones to go! Let me just tell you that the pie crust is AMAZING. It’s light and flakey, you could put any filling in it and it would be delicious. Worth noting is the sausage roll at KO Pies, and while not an actual “pie”, it should not be missed!
I couldn’t have a review of pies and not include Centerville Pie Company. I mean, they ARE Oprah approved! Check out my post about them here. The bottom left is the Cape Cod Crunch pie, only offered in their store in Centerville. Can’t make it to the Cape? Don’t worry, their delicious savory chicken pies can be found in your local grocery store in the freezer section.
And last but certainly not least, Ever So Humble Pie Company. I pick them up from Volante Farms in Needham or Brothers Marketplace in Weston. Their jumble berry pie my favorite, with cranberries, strawberries, blueberries and orange zest. Here are just some of the other flavors they offer:
New England Apple – Freshly peeled apples tossed with brown sugar and spices, heaped high beneath our delicate, flaky crust.
Wild Blueberry – Flavorful and juicy wild blueberries, kissed with lemon, nestled inside our tender, flaky crust.
Black & Blue – Two of summers most flavorful berries – blackberries and blueberries – together in one pie with fresh lemon and cinnamon.
Blue Barb – Plump and sweet blueberries partnered with tart rhubarb and a dash of orange zest.
Blue Raspberry – Tart red raspberries together with sweet, juicy blueberries enhanced with fresh lemons and a touch of cinnamon.
Cherry – Tart, Michigan grown cherries enhanced with a dash of pure almond oil.
Did I miss anywhere? Let me know where your favorite pies are from!
Disclaimer: The Shoofly Pie Company delivered a complimentary cherry pie and hand pies for this piece. We were guests of KO Pies and our 5 pies were provided complimentary (but we bought and walked out with a dozen frozen ones 😉 ). As noted in my previous post, my pies at Centerville Pie Company were provided complimentary.
March 12, 2017 Brunch at Club Passim
I went from brunching to never brunching…and now it seems as though I’m back on to brunching. I couldn’t be happier about it. Last weekend I headed over to Harvard Square to Club Passim to listen to some live music while brunching on some tasty treats. Brunch is served on Saturday AND Sunday. The venue offers an up close experience with the artist on the stage – the listening room is very intimate. They don’t take reservations, so come early if you want to grab a table.
Brunch included items such as the Brioche French Toast ($9) (pictured top middle) with vanilla egg battered brioche, topped with whipped butter, berry compote and VT maple syrup (they have a stuffed version too); a Passim breakfast sandwich ($10) (pictured middle left) with an over easy egg, has browns, cheddar and VT bacon with chipotle aioli on riddled brioche served with berries and banana; the avocado toast ($6) (pictured middle) topped with tomatoes and herbs; or the avocado eggs benedict ($14) served with poached eggs, avocado, cherry tomato, herbs and olive oil on a black pepper biscuit and served with hash browns (bottom left).
I think that the sides were the dark horses of brunch. The BKK street bread ($5) (pictured bottom middle) looks like toast – but it’s so much more. A nice light sweetness to it, it is not to be missed. I also loved the chiang mai sausage, which is house made and has a serious kick to it (but not right away). Make sure to try it with the herb sour cream!
Service was good, our server was attentive. Parking is on street or in nearby garages.
Disclaimer: I was invited to Club Passim as a guest of New England Food Bloggers. My meal was provided complimentary. All opinions are my own.
